What a DofE Gold Expedition
at Perhentian Looks Like

The Gold Residential section requires a purposeful activity away from home for 5+ days. Our Perhentian Islands marine conservation program is one of the most distinctive qualifying expeditions in Asia — here's exactly what students do.

D1

Arrival & Orientation

Students arrive at Kota Bharu airport and transfer to Kuala Besut jetty. Speedboat crossing to Perhentian Kecil. Site orientation, safety briefing, snorkelling competency check, equipment issue, and introduction to the marine research program. Evening: species ID workshop on local marine life.

D2

Coral Reef Surveys

Morning: SCUBA or snorkel transects on assigned reef sections — recording coral coverage, bleaching levels, and fish species counts using standardized methodology (REEF survey technique). Afternoon: data entry, analysis, and cross-referencing against previous seasons. Evening: turtle watch briefing + first night patrol.

D3

Turtle Monitoring & Jungle Trek

Morning: green and hawksbill turtle foraging observations — measuring individuals, recording GPS locations, and photographing fin patterns for the regional ID database. Afternoon: guided jungle trek across Perhentian Besar interior — rainforest ecology, plant ID, and water quality sampling in freshwater streams. Data journaling for DofE log requirements.

D4

Independent Research Project

Teams assigned independent mini-projects (e.g., microplastic density survey, specific coral genera health assessment, or shore bird count). Students design methodology, execute fieldwork, and compile results under supervision. This component satisfies the DofE requirement for purposeful activity with a conservation outcome. Evening: group presentation of findings.

D5

Debrief, Certification & Departure

Morning: final data submissions, DofE journal review with assessors, and group debrief on conservation impact. Students receive participation certificates and a summary of the season's research contribution. Our assessor completes the DofE qualifying section sign-off paperwork on-site. Afternoon: return speedboat crossing and transfer to airport. Students arrive home with a verified Gold Residential section complete.

Common Questions from
School Coordinators

Is Ecoteer a DofE Approved Activity Provider?

Yes. Fuze Ecoteer (operating as Ecoteer) is a fully accredited DofE Approved Activity Provider. We deliver qualifying expedition sections at Gold, Silver, and Bronze levels — providing all required assessor paperwork and direct coordination with your school's DofE Coordinator. Our Perhentian Islands program is one of the leading DofE qualifying expeditions in Asia.

What conservation activities do students participate in?

Students do real, data-driven fieldwork. Marine activities include: sea turtle nesting beach patrols, coral reef health surveys (REEF methodology), fish species counts, and marine debris assessments. Terrestrial activities include: sun bear habitat surveys, camera trap data collection, rainforest biodiversity transects, and river ecology sampling. All data contributes to ongoing published research programs.

How many students can you accommodate per group?

We accommodate groups of 20 to 50 students per expedition, with a minimum of 8. Perhentian Islands holds up to 50 students; Merapoh rainforest site up to 40. All DofE expeditions maintain student-to-supervisor ratios per DofE guidelines. Groups of 50+ can be split across consecutive weeks. For student volunteer programs, individuals are welcome from age 16+.

Where are the expeditions based?

Our primary DofE Gold Residential base is the Perhentian Islands, a marine national park in the South China Sea — ~3.5 hours from Kota Bharu airport by road and speedboat. For terrestrial programs, we operate from Merapoh, Pahang, bordering Taman Negara National Park. Both sites are accessible from KL, Singapore, Bangkok, and Jakarta.

What does a typical expedition cost?

Per-student costs range from USD 300–500 depending on duration. A 5-day DofE marine expedition at Perhentian costs ~USD 350–420/student (accommodation, meals, boat, equipment, instructors, DofE paperwork included). A 7-day program is ~USD 420–490; 10-day ~USD 480–550. Prices are for groups of 20+. Contact us for a custom quote.

Can you provide risk assessments and school documentation?

Yes. We provide comprehensive risk assessments, method statements, and site-specific hazard analyses for every program. DofE qualifying section sign-off forms, participation certificates, curriculum-linked learning outcomes, and post-expedition school reports are all included. Documentation is sent to your trip coordinator before booking confirmation.
